When the Bead Is Whispering

I have a sage green Dzi agate on my mat right now.

It's been there for two days.

I picked it up because something about it called to me — the color, which is that particular muted green that sits between sage and sea glass and doesn't fully commit to either. The pattern, which is the quiet geometric kind that Dzi beads carry, old and deliberate and not trying to impress anyone. The weight of it in my hand, which is exactly right.

It has something to say. I just can't hear it yet.

This is crafter's block, and it's different from not having ideas. I have the idea — or the beginning of one, the feeling of one. The bead is already chosen. The intention is there. But the design won't come. I sit down with the wire and the other beads and I start arranging things around it and nothing clicks. Everything I try feels like a guess. The bead sits in the center of my mat and waits, patient in a way I am not.

I've learned not to force it.

Early on I would have pushed through — made something, finished it, moved on. Some of those pieces were fine. None of them were right. You can feel the difference when you're wearing something that was forced versus something that was found. The forced ones sit on your wrist like a decision. The found ones sit there like they were always going to be there.

So I'm waiting.

I've been picking up other beads and holding them next to the Dzi — not to commit, just to listen. A warm terracotta that almost works but pulls the color somewhere too earthy. A pale gold glass that gets closer but feels too delicate for what the agate is asking for. A deep teal that I keep coming back to, that might be part of the answer, that I'm not ready to decide about yet.

The bead is whispering. I'm getting closer to hearing it.

I think this is actually the best part of the process — the part before the design exists, when it's still just a feeling and a focal and a question. Once I know what the bracelet is, the making is almost mechanical. But this part, the listening part, is where the work actually happens. It just doesn't look like work from the outside.

It looks like a woman sitting at a table staring at a bead.

Which is exactly what it is.

I'll let you know what it says.
